Chain Length Guide for Men: 18, 20, 22 and 24 Inches

Choose a chain length by measuring where you want it to sit, not by assuming one length fits every man. Eighteen, 20, 22 and 24 inches equal 45.72, 50.8, 55.88 and 60.96cm. How those lengths fall depends on your neck, the chain and the clothes underneath.

A close-up product image tells you about a design. It cannot tell you how the same chain will sit on your body. This guide gives you a practical way to compare lengths before buying, whether you want a small detail at an open collar or a pendant over a T-shirt.

Quick answer: what size chain for men?

There is no single right size, because it depends on your neck, the chain’s width and where you want it to sit. Chains are commonly sold at 18, 20, 22 and 24 inches (45.72 to 60.96cm). OUTLWD’s tennis chains are mostly listed at 20 inches and its Cuban chains at 21 inches, with a few plain chains at 18 inches. Use the measuring method below to choose, and check the length on the product page.

Chain length chart: inches to centimetres

Exact conversions; fit descriptions are only relative
Inches Centimetres How to compare it
18 45.72 The shortest of these four choices; test clearance carefully.
20 50.8 5.08cm longer overall than 18 inches.
22 55.88 More overall length to try over clothing or with a pendant.
24 60.96 The longest of these four choices; check the pendant's final position.

An extra two inches describes the total chain length, not an extra two inches of vertical drop on your chest. The chain travels around the back and sides of your neck before reaching the front. Its shape changes as it gets longer, so there is no fixed conversion from extra length to chest position.

Some products use centimetres while others use inches. Divide centimetres by 2.54 to convert to inches, or multiply inches by 2.54 to convert to centimetres. Keep the original product measurement when comparing options. A nominal 50cm chain is close to 20 inches, but those numbers are not exactly the same.

Measure your preferred position at home

  1. Put on the shirt you expect to wear with the chain.
  2. Drape a soft measuring tape or non-stretch string loosely around your neck.
  3. Adjust the lowest point to the position you prefer; keep the loop comfortable and loose.
  4. Mark where the ends meet, remove the loop and measure it flat.
  5. Compare the result with the available lengths and repeat the check for the closest options.

Do this standing naturally, then look down, turn your head and sit. Clothing shifts, and a position that looks good in a still mirror pose may feel inconvenient when you move. Do not tie a string tightly or use a rigid cable as a fitted necklace. The measurement is a guide, not a substitute for checking the actual piece.

Using a chain you already own

If you like the fit of an existing chain, lay it straight with the clasp open and measure the overall length including the fastening. If an extender is present, measure the setting you actually use and record the adjustable range separately. Also note the width and whether you normally wear a pendant on it.

That last detail matters. A heavy pendant can change a chain's shape; a wider construction may rest differently from a fine chain of the same overall length. Your existing chain is useful evidence about your preference, but an exact length match is not a guarantee of identical drape.

Current OUTLWD examples at different lengths

The 5mm Tennis Chain is listed at 20 inches in the current catalogue. The 14mm ICED Classic Cuban Link Chain is listed at 21 inches. Read these as two different designs as well as two different lengths; the older numbers in their handles are not the current size specification.

The ICED Neon Thunder Pendant lists an included 70cm steel chain, approximately 27.56 inches. That is longer than the four measurements in the table. Check where the pendant itself finishes rather than comparing only the chain's lowest point.

The ICED Infinity Cuban Link Chain product page lists 18-, 20- and 22-inch options. Use its current option selector to compare the exact finish and length you want. Available variants can change, so confirm the selection before ordering.

Browse tennis chains for men and Cuban chains for men to compare constructions. Our Cuban width guide covers the separate question of how broad you want the chain to look.

Allow space for the pendant

A pendant hangs below its connection to the chain. Check its listed height and bail, the loop through which the chain passes. If measurements are absent, ask before ordering. A wide chain or large clasp may not pass through a small bail even when the pendant and chain look compatible in separate photos.

When measuring, mark both the intended chain position and the bottom of the pendant. Try the combination over your usual clothing. If a product includes a chain, read that chain's length and the included-items description. “Pendant” in a title alone is not proof that a chain comes with every listing.

Layering without relying on a fixed formula

Begin with two lengths you can distinguish in a mirror. A two-inch difference is one option to test, but it does not guarantee the chains will stay separated. Pendant weight, link shape, movement and the neckline can bring layers together. Choose the spacing by looking at the complete combination.

For a clear starting arrangement, try one chain without a pendant and a second with one. Let the pendant have visible space below the other chain. Keep each clasp accessible, and avoid forcing links through a pendant bail. If the layers repeatedly snag, simplify the combination rather than tugging them apart while wearing them.

Match the length to the clothes you actually wear

With an open shirt, decide whether you want the chain inside the opening or over the fabric. With a crew neck, check whether the chain rests on the collar edge, disappears behind it or sits below it. None of those positions is automatically wrong; the useful question is whether it stays where you want it.

For a hoodie or kurta, repeat the measurement over that garment. Thick fabric, a high neckline or embroidery may change the visual spacing. A product photograph on a different neckline is a styling reference, not a promise of placement on yours. If you are buying for an event, measure with the intended outfit first.

Before you choose a size

Confirm whether the length is fixed or adjustable, whether a chain is included with a pendant, and whether the seller measures the clasp in the overall length. If a title, description and option disagree, ask support to resolve that product's size. Do not assume the largest number is an extender or that a handle records a second size.

Keep your chosen measurement for future comparisons, but check each design again. For wrists and rings, use the separate methods on the OUTLWD size guide. For keeping the finish in better condition between wears, read the plated jewellery care guide.

Chains listed at 20 inches are together in 20 inch chains for men. Pick a width in 5mm tennis chains and bracelets or 14mm Cuban link chains and bracelets, check base-metal detail in stainless steel chains for men, and see how a pendant changes the drop in cross pendants and chains for men.

Chain length FAQ

How many centimetres is a 20-inch chain?

Exactly 50.8cm. A product listed at 50cm is close, but not identical, so compare its stated measurement.

Will an 18-inch chain fit me?

Measure a loose 45.72cm loop on yourself and check the intended position and comfort. Neck circumference and chain construction affect fit.

What length should I choose for a pendant?

Measure where you want the chain to sit, then allow for the pendant's own height. Check the bail and clasp compatibility as well as length.

Does adding two inches move the pendant two inches lower?

No. The extra length goes around the whole chain path. The resulting vertical drop depends on the shape around your neck.

Can two chains of equal length sit differently?

Yes. Width, construction, clasp, pendant weight and clothing can affect how they rest. Use measurements alongside the product details.
