Cuban Chain Size Guide: Width, Length and Fit

A Cuban chain has two separate sizes: width across the links, usually in millimetres, and total length, usually in inches or centimetres. Choose the width for the look you want, then measure the length on yourself. Neither number alone tells you whether a chain will fit comfortably.

Start with a ruler, a soft measuring tape and the shirt you expect to wear. A product close-up is useful for checking the links, but it is not a scale drawing. The steps below help you translate a catalogue measurement into a choice you can actually wear.

Width: what the millimetre number tells you

Width describes the face of the chain from one outside edge to the other. It is different from link thickness, which describes depth. A 14mm chain is twice the stated width of a 7mm chain, but that does not mean it weighs twice as much or feels twice as heavy. Construction, metal, length and clasp all affect weight.

Cut paper strips at the widths you are considering and place them over your shirt in a mirror. This gives a rough visual comparison without pretending to reproduce the chain's drape. Keep the paper flat; do not fasten a strip tightly around your neck. Use a ruler to check the printed or cut dimensions.

Cuban widths: a visual starting point, not a fit prescription
Width What to compare Shopping decision
About 7mm A narrower band of links Consider when you want more of the shirt and neckline visible.
About 12–14mm A broader band with more visible surface Check how the chain sits against your collar and whether you prefer it worn alone.
About 15–20mm A wide front profile Check listed weight, clasp and length; width alone cannot establish comfort.

These are styling choices, not rules about body type. A narrow frame does not disqualify a wide chain, and broad shoulders do not require one. Decide how much attention you want the jewellery to carry in the outfit. Stone coverage and lighting can change its visual impact without changing the measured width.

Real catalogue examples to compare

The Cuban Link Chain (Gold) lists a 7mm width and 20-inch length. Its description gives a gold finish; that wording is not a claim that the chain is solid gold. Use it as a narrower Cuban example and check the product page for the full current specification.

The ICED Classic Cuban Link Chain lists 14mm and 21 inches, with stainless steel, white-gold plating and diamond-simulant stones. Notice that the URL contains “20” while the current product specification says 21 inches. Read the specification and selected option instead of treating a URL as a measurement.

The Baguette Cuban Link Chain product page lists 15mm and 20mm width options with 18-, 20- and 22-inch lengths. Its listing names copper and CZ. Check the current option selector and compare the exact width-and-length combination before adding it to your basket.

Length: measure the route the chain will take

Use a soft tape or a loose piece of non-stretch string to trace where you want the chain to sit. Mark where the ends meet, remove it and measure the full length flat. Keep it loose throughout. Repeat over the clothing you plan to wear if the chain will sit outside a T-shirt or hoodie.

For reference, 18 inches is 45.72cm, 20 inches is 50.8cm, 22 inches is 55.88cm and 24 inches is 60.96cm. Those conversions are exact; the position on your chest is not. Your neck circumference, posture, shirt collar, chain construction and any pendant change the way a chain rests.

If you already own a comfortable chain, open its clasp and measure the overall length end to end, including the fastening. Also note whether it has an extender. Compare like with like: an adjustable chain worn at its longest setting is not the same reference as its shortest setting. The chain length guide explains the comparison in more detail.

Check the clasp and the shape, not just the numbers

Look for a clear clasp image and a stated fastening type where available. A broad clasp may sit differently from the links around it. Some chains bend easily into a curve; others feel more structured. You cannot establish that difference from a millimetre measurement alone. Ask about any missing specification before paying.

When trying a chain, follow the fastening instructions and close it gently. Do not force, sharply bend or pull-test it. If the fastening will not close normally, stop and contact support. Keep packaging while you check the piece, and read the current returns policy before buying rather than assuming a sizing exchange is available.

Plain, iced and baguette: size is only one distinction

“Cuban” describes the link style. “Iced” describes a stone-covered appearance, not a particular gemstone. “Baguette” usually refers to an elongated rectangular stone cut in this context. Retail names such as “Miami Cuban” are not a universal measurement standard, so compare the actual links, dimensions and product description.

Do not infer CZ, moissanite or diamond from sparkle. A listing that says only “diamond simulant” has not identified the exact simulant. Likewise, gold-coloured and white-metal finishes should not be read as solid precious-metal composition. The stone terminology guide separates those terms.

Putting a chain and bracelet together

You can repeat a link shape without choosing identical widths. If you wear a watch, allow each wrist item space so the pieces are not continually rubbing together. Measure your wrist separately; chain length has no relationship to bracelet length. The size guide includes a measurement method for both.

For a first purchase, test one chain against several outfits you already own. Check it with an open collar, a crew neck and any outer layer you regularly wear. If the chain catches the collar or sits where you dislike, revisit length before automatically choosing a different width. One measurement change can solve a different problem from another.

Your pre-order checklist

  • Confirm the selected width and length, not just the product title.
  • Read material, finish and stone fields independently.
  • Check the current price for that exact variant.
  • Look for weight and clasp information; ask if either matters and is missing.
  • Measure on yourself and read the store's current policy before ordering.

Cuban chain size FAQ

Is a 14mm Cuban chain too wide?

That depends on the look you want. Compare a 14mm paper strip with a narrower one over your usual shirt, then assess length and weight separately. There is no universal body-size rule.

Does a wide chain always need a longer length?

No fixed conversion applies. Construction and your preferred position matter. Measure the route on yourself and check the chain's dimensions rather than automatically adding inches.

Is 20 inches the right size for everyone?

No. Twenty inches is 50.8cm, but it will sit differently on different people. Compare it with a chain you own or a loose tape measurement.

Can I use the handle or product photograph as the size?

No. Use the current specification and selected variant. Handles can retain older wording, and photographs can change apparent scale.

Does “iced” mean the chain contains diamonds?

No. It describes the appearance. Read the exact stone material in the product description and ask for clarification if it only says “simulant”.
